How to determine Insulation in House Walls
How can a person seeking to buy a house find out how much and what kind of
insulation is inside the walls and ceilings? The same question as it
applies to glass windows?

Depending on your locality, you may be able to have the gas
company come out with an infrared heat detector camera to take pictures of
the outside of the house on a hot (or cold) day. Lots of red (in winter)
or blue (in summer) would mean poor insulation R-values, and the gas
company can help you interpret the results. Plus, it will show the exact
locations of where you are losing heat (through windows, walls, top edge
of the basement foundation, attic, etc).
If the house is fairly new, with 20 years old, there should
have been an insulation inspection on file with town records. Any older
then that, there would be no records on insulation.
You can get a hint to the insulation by pulling off a outlet
plate and carefully looking past the box.
